What Is ACL Reconstruction
In ACL Reconstruction, the torn ligament is
removed and replaced with a piece of tendon
from another part of your knee or from a
deceased donor.
This surgery is an out patient
procedure that’s performed through
small incisions around your knee joint.
However, because ACL surgery involves a complex reconstruction or replacement of a major tendon, it can be considered a major surgery.
ou may be able to return to most of your regular activities within a few weeks. But it will be several months before you have complete use of your knee. It may take as long as 6 months to a year before your knee is ready for hard physical work or certain sports.
The first question has a simple but imprecise answer: it depends. If your surgery was successful with no complications and you plan to follow the rehabilitation recommendations of your orthopedic surgeon to the letter, the best guess is no less than six months. For some, it can take up to two years to get back to 100%.
It should take about a month to be able to climb stairs comfortably following surgery. Most patients have returned to a normal daily return with no pain or swelling after the first month (and often sooner).
Although only 10% of grafts fail, this is still a large number of cases. There can be many reasons for an ACL reconstruction failure.
