World Arthritis Day (WAD) is observed every year on October 12. It’s a global awareness day dedicated to raising understanding about rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) — conditions that affect joints, bones, muscles, and connective tissues.

Purpose

The main goals of World Arthritis Day are to:

  • Increase awareness about arthritis and its impact on quality of life.
  • Encourage early diagnosis and proper management to reduce pain and disability.
  • Promote research and access to better treatments.
  • Empower patients to live active, fulfilling lives despite their conditions.

What Is Arthritis?

“Arthritis” refers to over 100 types of joint diseases, including:

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) — caused by wear and tear of cartilage.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) — an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks joints.
  • Gout, psoriatic arthritis, juvenile arthritis, and others.

Common symptoms include joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility.

  • Share information and stories on social media using hashtags like #WorldArthritisDay or #WAD2025.
  • Attend or organize awareness walks, webinars, or community events.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyle habits — exercise, weight management, and balanced nutrition.
  • Support arthritis research organizations and patient advocacy groups.
